Santa Cruz Must Be the Best Spanish School in Guatemala! (With an Unbeatable View!) spanish school reviews, lake atitlan, guatemala

My 17 year old daughter wanted to study Spanish. I wanted to brush up on mine as well, but I knew I didn't want to study in the city. I wanted to enjoy Lake Atitlan with its gorgeous views while I studied. What a delight to find this idyllic location with the excellent teachers! Our experience surpassed any expectations. We totally enjoyed the professional classes with a gorgeous view. In the afternoons, we explored, taking the boat to visit the little villages, markets and ziplining. We had made arrangements for classes at a second town on the lake for the second week, but once we saw the two locations, there was no comparison between the two, and we quickly cancelled the other class location and stayed on with Santa Cruz. Rosario was extremely helpful. She gave a couple of additional afternoon courses for us. We felt extremely safe as two females while we stayed in this community- which is not the case in many other areas of the country. My daughter said those were the best two weeks of her life. If you are uncertain, just do it! You will not regret it!

Did 16 hours of 1:1 tuition at beginner level here and enjoyed every minute. My tutor and the reception staff were both extremely welcoming. The school also offers tuition at a more than reasonable rate in a perfect setting. Would have stayed for much more tuition but I wanted to see more of Guatemala.

I studied here for about 5 weeks in total and my children also studied here during this time. They are 5 and 8 years old. We all had a great time with the teachers and the staff in the office. They truly care about the progress of their students and they were equally concerned with making sure the kids were having fun while learning. I love that they have a policy in place to speak only Spanish! It forced me to practice more and more. Of course, if absolutely need be, they can communicate in English as well.

The staff here are so helpful and accomodating, we only stayed a week but we learnt enough to touch up on some Spanish before out trip, only problem was staying at the awful hostel 'Free Cerveza' which added stress to our learning experience, but nevertheless couldnt have been more thankful for this place!

The staff at the Santa Cruz Spanish School were SO helpful and SO accommodating. It was very easy to coordinate with them before my trip via WhatsApp and email. My teacher (in a one-on-one setting) was phenomenal! All this in addition to being in one of the most beautiful settings on earth! Could not recommend this school more highly!

I've studied Spanish in a number of schools but this was the best. The teacher was dedicated, the setting beautiful, the food prepared by the chef, Don Domingo, so good. I was here for the month of August and it was nice and cool, like Springtime. It rained some but only for part of the day or at night, mostly good weather. It's easy to take a boat to other parts of the lake and there's plenty to explore. I also went hiking and swimming. I had my own bungalow right on the lake with a perfect view and my own front porch. I learned a lot of Spanish. I certainly recommend this place.

Learning Spanish has always been on my "bucket list" and I was very satified with my experience at the Santa Cruz Spanish School. First of all, Guatemala is the perfect country to learn Spanish as a beginner because (as it was explained to me) the indigenous people speak Mayan as a primary language, with Spanish as their second language. Therefore, they speak Spanish clearly and more slowly than the people of some of the neighboring nations. Lake Atitlan, and more specifically, Santa Cruz la Laguna is also perfect for learning Spanish because it's away from the more heavily touristed towns on the lake, and because of the tranquil garden setting with an amazing view. My teacher, Rosario, was fantastic.... I can't say enough glowing things about her and her teaching skills. She was extremely organized, great sense of humor, and incredibly patient while I struggled with my stories each morning. I took 4 weeks of lessons, for 4 hours each morning. While I'm not fluent at this point, I have a real working knowledge of the basics (including past, imperfect, present, future, and conditional tenses) and I am prepared to continue my studies on my own, or by lessons by Skype with Rosario at the school. (I promise that I will practice, Rosario! :) You will be happy you chose to take your classes here. Rosario is a real gem. Thank you for your friendship and your help!

My wife and I came to his school our second week in Guatemala after studying a first week in Xela. Let me say, the teachers here are excellent and all the staff are so kind! I worked with Pedro, and he is very professional patient. He speaks slowly and clearly as you learn to listen and will break his sentences down into small fragments if you like as he speaks English as well. He also writes down words that you don't know and then makes you use them conversationally so you begin to retain the words and concepts. The setting is at Hotel Arca de Noe with lush gardens and a picturesque view of the volcanoes overlooking
Lake Atitlan. The quality of the teaching is high and I recommend this place highly!

I spent one week with the Santa Cruz Spanish School and LOVED every minute of it. Wish I had been able to have more time. I took classes with Lidia, who was so kind and patient and such a great teacher. Lidia shared local life and history with me as well as teaching me Spanish language skills that I hope to use the rest of my life. Our classroom was in a garden by the lake, and I cannot describe how beautiful it was.

Highly recommend this team and school. Prices were very competitive, classes and teachers were chosen based on my knowledge and skills, they worked with my schedule entirely and were flexible when I had other commitments.

I did 2 weeks of spanish lessons at the Santa Cruz Spanish School in August and I would highly recommend it. Pedro who arranges everything is incredibly well organised, flexible and friendly. My teacher was excellent and tailored each lesson to my specific requirements. It was much better value for money than the schools in San Pedro and as it is smaller, much more personalised. The location is stunning - learning spanish in a beautiful garden overlooking the lake couldn't be better. The Arca de Noe Hotel where the school is based is a nice, simple hotel with good food and very friendly staff. I visited many places on Lake Atitlan and Santa Cruz is definitely my favourite place. I highly recommend Santa Cruz Spanish School.

I took a week of Spanish classes here in July. The "classroom" is a beautiful garden on the shore of the lake where you can learn while seeing volcanoes in the background. The one-on-one instruction is great and is a good value for your money. The staff is very accomodating and will try to help you with anything you need. They have great advice on tours at Lake Atitlan as well as other areas of Guatemala, and they can book tours/shuttles for you at a good price. I definitely recommend the homestay as I lived with a wonderful family in the Mayan village on the hill. I really felt as if they incorporated me into their family, which helped me learn a lot about the culture and the people.

My wife and I spend a Month with the school in a homestay. The family was amazing and classes are fun in great garden with lots of birds. Perdo is the kindest person, always excited to give information. He and his brothers share the same charme and offer great tours with lots of information about the surrounding. Part of the School were free speeches about culture, the Mayan calender or whatever interest you the most. We lost our creditcard and some money, and he helped us to get everything back, even though we were already in El Salvador.

Outstanding place with incredible affordable prices.

Thank you Perdo, Rosa and Domigo

Santa Cruz Spanish School, located at the most beautiful spot on Lake Atitlan, is a fantastic place to learn Spanish. Me and my husband spent one week at the school with homestay and recieved 5 hours a day for 5 days a week. We were living in a homestay that the school organized for us. It was a wonderful experience and the family was very friendly and we felt like home!
Thank you Pedro and your family for the wonderful time staying in Santa Cruz..

My husband, my twin 9 year old boys and I spent 4 weeks in Santa Cruz attending the Santa Cruz Spanish School and living in a home stay that the school organized for us. It was a delightful experience on many levels and it would not have been possible if it weren't for the effortless professionalism and kindness of Pedro and his crew.

This was the first time we had visited Guatemala and the longest we had ever spent away from home, so we were a bit nervous about what to expect but from the moment the Santa Cruz van picked us up at the airport we felt safe and welcome.

We loved the family that we stayed with and we developed friendships with them that will last for years and years. We are very grateful to Pedro for helping us make that connection.

The location of the school is absolutely beautiful and the teachers were fantastic. My husband and I adored Lidia, our teacher, and she taught us Spanish with an excellent balance of humor and technique. Rosario, the teacher for our boys, was delightful and she kept them moving and laughing throughout the 4 hour lessons each day. Pedro organized some great day trips for us on the weekends and even a 4 day trip to Antigua.

After visiting other towns around the lake, we all felt that Santa Cruz was just the right fit for us-the small village on top of the hill that wasn't filled with tourists, the lovely areas down by the lake and the welcoming people at the school made us feel right at home. It was hard to leave! Highly Recommended.

spanish school reviews, lake atitlan, guatemala

My wife and I visited Lake Atitlan in Nov/Dec 2009 and each day we had Spanish lessons at Santa cruz Spanish School and Pedro arranged our tours. My wife felt that her Spanish teacher was the best

We so enjoyed our experience here. The staff is excellent and the view is unbeatable. I learned more in my two weeks than in an entire semester of Spanish. Everyone was very helpful and they also arranged our pickup and drop off at the airport. The tour of a neighboring town was a highlight, and much enjoyed by the whole family!

  • We knew from our very first class, Santa Cruz Spanish School was exactly what we'd been looking for.
The entire staff has it all going for them. Magda especially is such an attentive and approachable teacher. We are on the same page and we just love her! Plus all of her great material adds that much more to our educational experience.
Serious though, you can't beat the fresh cup of coffee every class!
¡Thumbs up with two fist pumps!

    Gracias Amigos!!

The school is very good, and can cater to people who want to learn Spanish on a long term or short term basis. Magda is a very good teacher and you are able to get great conversations going with her which enables learning lots of new vocabulary. It's in a very peaceful location, which allows you the perfect setting to be a student. I highly recommend coming here if you are beginner, intermediate or advanced speaker!

  • My husband and I took one week of classes at this school while staying in the adjacent Arca de Noe hotel. We had a great experience! I was an intermediate Spanish speaker and he was a beginner; each of us had one-on-one instruction appropriate to our level and improved significantly over the course of the week. Our teachers were fun, helpful and easygoing; we felt like we became friends with them. Both of them were women from nearby towns across the lake, and classes went back and forth between practicing grammar and practicing conversation. The teachers did a good job of talking about local culture and their experiences growing up here, so they became a major cultural connection for us as well. At the suggestion of the staff at the Spanish school, we also went to the market at Solola for one of our days of "class," which turned out to be the highlight of our time in Guatemala.

The classes were taught on a lawn that overlooks the lake, a very peaceful, inspiring setting to spend several hours a day! We did get pestered sometimes by bugs, little black flies that bit our feet and legs if we left them exposed...but with bug cream or socks and shoes, they weren't bad (and the weather was cool enough that socks and shoes were fine). Overall, taking classes at this school was a wonderful experience that we plan to repeat if we return to the area.
